The programme’s vision is to embrace the manaakitanga, energy and spirit of Tāmaki to build on its many strengths. Part of this is about delivering 10,500 new warm, high-quality homes, and upgraded streets, parks, and town centres. But Tāmaki’s regeneration encompasses much more than the physical environment. It’s also about working alongside the community, mana whenua, schools and businesses to provide more opportunity and a brighter future for all people who call Tāmaki home.
There are currently 2,500 old state homes in Tāmaki, many of them past their best - and most on large sections. Over the next two decades, these will be replaced by around 3,500 new state homes, and around 7,000 new affordable and market homes to meet Auckland’s housing needs. These will range from one bedroom apartments to large family and multi-generational homes, to suit households of all shapes and sizes.
Over the next two decades Tāmaki’s 18,000 residents will grow to 60,000. The Tāmaki regeneration programme will revitalise town centres and strengthen the local economy by partnering with local businesses. It’s also taking a holistic approach to supporting health and wellbeing, education, jobs and skills for local whānau.
Tāmaki’s regeneration will include significant upgrades to town centres, streets, stormwater, wastewater and other infrastructure. The area’s numerous parks and reserves will be beautified and made easier to access and use. An 11km shared cycleway and pedestrian loop will be completed in the next 3-5 years, connecting residents across Tāmaki to each other and to the maunga and the awa.
